If you are looking for a European tourist destination, consider the Veneto region of northern Italy on the Gulf of Venice. Venice is its best-known city and one of the most popular tourist destinations on earth. But the Veneto region is a lot more than this great city. There are excellent tourist attractions elsewhere, and you won't have to fight the huge crowds. With a little luck you'll avoid tourist traps, and come back home with the feeling that you have truly visited Italy. This article examines tourist attractions in the Shakespearean town of Verona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Be sure to read our companion articles on northern Veneto, southern Veneto, and the university city of Padua. Verona boasts many vestiges from Roman times. Its Roman amphitheatre is the third largest in Italy and its interior is virtually intact. This edifice hosts fairs, theatre, opera and other public events, especially summers.

The Roman arch bridge over the Adige River was partially destroyed in World War II and then rebuilt using original materials. The Twelfth Century Romanesque Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore sits on a Fourth Century shrine dedicated to the city's patron saint, St. Zeno. Its splendid one hundred ten foot bell tower was mentioned in Dante's Divine Comedy. The vaulted crypt holds the tomb of St. Zeno and tombs of several other saints.

Verona's largest church is the Fifteenth Century Sant'Anastasia whose interior is an excellent example of Gothic architecture. Items of honor include frescoes and hunchback statues that dispense holy water. The Fourteenth Century Castelvecchio on the banks of the Adige River sits on what is probably the site of a Roman fortress. Its art museum specializes in Venetian painters and sculptors.

Verona's squares include the Roman Herb Square that still maintains its medieval look and some produce stalls. The Gentlemen's Square is Verona's center of activities. Next door is the Scaglieri Palace, once home to the ruling family. Don't leave Verona without visiting those star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet. The Twelfth Century Casi di Giulietta (Juliet's House) long belonged to the Dal Cappello family and since Cappello sounds like Capulet perhaps... The house at Via Cappello, 23 with its courtyard is most likely not the real thing, but crowds come to gawk and dream. This could be the place to propose. Verona's cuisine features typical Po Valley dishes: mixed boiled meats, nervetti (calf's foot and veal shank salad), and risotto, often cooked in Amarone wine. Valpolicella DOC is a world famous, and yet often mediocre wine produced north of Verona. It can be transformed into fine wines including Valpolicella Ripasso and Amarone DOC.

Barcelona Travel Tips- A Guide to Geting Around

Barcelona has a public transport system that is an absolute delight for visitors to this spectacular city.

The totally integrated system allows you to get around cheaply and easily for 24 hours a day. The Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona is the organisation which is responsible for co-ordinating not only the city's Metro and bus systems but also the trams and local train services.

By far the quickest way to travel around the Catalan capital city is by the truly excellent Metro system, with an easy to follow colour-coded route map that comes as a blessed relief to those more used to trying to decipher London's underground maps. There are more than enough stations - you're never very far from one wherever your wanderings take you - and they are easily identifiable by the signs with the blue letter M inside the red diamond. A single ride will cost you 1.25 - but, as we shall see later - there are some very good deals to be had.

The bus routes - and there are more than 80 lines across the city - may not be as quick as the Metro but they certainly offer an easy method of seeing the many architectural splendours - ranging from the bizarre Gaudi inspired architecture to the more classically inspired splendours the city can provide. The bus stops are at red signs with brown benches underneath a small roof and almost all of the buses in Barcelona are now wheelchair accessible, with many having wheelchairs lifts. For late-nighters, Barcelona provides a comprehensive night service, the Nitbus, which operates until 4.30 in the morning and goes past most of the popular night venues - some can even take you straight to the airport.

You can pick up free maps showing all the city's bus and Metro lines - including the Nitbus - at tourist offices and Metro stations - and hotels often have them. The Tourist and Leisure Cards which offer significant savings on fares are available at TMB Customer Service centres, Metro stations, Newsagents, Tourist Information Offices and even at Lottery selling outlets. A two day card offering unlimited use costs 10.70, a three day card 14.30 and a five day 23.10 - and remember that they're valid for all the TMB services.

Of course, Barcelona also has its share of taxis for those who prefer this mode of transport or who have luggage they need to stow. Barcelona cabs are easily recognised by their black and yellow colouring and, of course, have the green light on the roof which indicates they are 'libre' - lliure in Catalan. If the light is yellow, then the taxi is unavailable for hire or occupied. Currently there is a minimum fare of 1.80, with rates at 0.82 per kilometre or 1.04 per kilometre at nights and weekends. Obviously you can expect surcharges for luggage, etc and, if you're looking to travel from the airport by cab, the minimum charge is 15.00, with 1 for every item of luggage.

With regard to taxis, it's as well to remember, though, that much of the centre of Barcelona is pedestrianised and allows access only to buses, so there are some places taxis cannot take you.

Barcelona is considered, justifiably, one of Europe's most attractive destinations - combining, as it does, beach and city, ancient and modern, local and international. As befits such a venue, the public transport systems are in place to ensure that visitors can really make the most of their time there

Tradition: Estes Park always has treasured families. Holiday activities here are planned so people of all ages will enjoy the outing.

The Lights: At one time, no holiday lights in Estes Park were turned on until the official lighting at dusk the day after Thanksgiving, a tradition that began in the early '50s. The ceremony featured a small contingent of locals and high school band members who gathered around a spruce tree in Bond Park (the park in the center of downtown) to play and sing Christmas carols.

In 1951, the town's light and power department first created re-bar Christmas trees and attached them to poles throughout the area. The design plans have been shared with communities across the United States and our village now has 120 "trees" in the collection. Along Elkhorn Avenue (the town's main street) trees now wear thousands of white twinkle lights, creating a storybook look after dark. In all, there are 175 decorated trees downtown. Merchants carry out the theme in their storefront windows.

The Murals: Between 1957 and 1966 Buell Porter designed and constructed the billboard murals seen around town. All are individually lit and provide a special addition to the ambience of the holiday season here. Six of them were refurbished between 1988 and 1993 by local artists. Santa Claus (constructed in 1957 and reconstructed in 2005) was the first mural designed by Porter. With Rudolph leading the sleigh, Santa appears to fly over Estes Park from the green space known as "The Knoll" just north of Town Hall. The display stretches 80 feet.

Facts about Estes Park's Holiday Season

The Nativity Scene (resorted in 1989) is at the corner of Virginia Drive and Elkhorn Avenue in Bond Par. It was Porter's second mural and originally was constructed and painted in 1958. The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe is the first display seen when entering town on U.S. Highway 36 (from Boulder and Denver) and was added to the collection in 1965.

The Three Wise Men on the hill above the Riverwalk (south of Elkhorn Avenue) are nearly 20 feet tall. Shepherds, part of the scene above the Riverwalk, features sheep that are six feet tall. Years ago, local high school students protested that the herd wasn't politically correct and made frequent attempts to make certain at least one of them was a black sheep. The town eventually helped the youngsters out by officially painting at least one of the lambs black.

Christmas in Bugville (restored in 1990) now is in Bond Park, at the corner of MacGregor and Elkhorn Avenues.

Santa's Card Shop (restored in 1988) is on Elkhorn Avenue in front of the Public Library.

The Holy Figure overlooking the West end of Elkhorn Avenue provides a special religious message for the holiday season. It was constructed in 1966.

The Parade The lighted, evening parade was started in the late 1980s so the town could share its Christmas magic with others. The first three years, the parade was billed as "Santa's Storybook Parade" and featured walking characters and a few floats depicting storybook themes with Santa Claus. Later, the theme of the parade swelled as the floats became Disney-like: large, lighted floats and units. Floats are constructed by a team of volunteers beginning months before the parade. Some are more than 40 feet long, 12 feet high with more than 6,000 lights.

Community participation is widespread with school children of all ages riding the floats, carrying banners and portraying costumed characters. Parade attendance has grown steadily over the years, with last year's estimate placed at nearly 25,000.

The town where you leave remembering nothing. This place is just one big drunken haze. You get a tractor inner tube and float down a river and stop off at bars on route and get free shots of lao lao whiskey and then drink buckets of more lao lao whiskey and coke until 6pm then when you think you have enough you go over to an island which is just bars (smile is the best) until middnight when the curfew kicks in. Try the rope swings at each of the bars. The first bar has the biggest whatever other bars may claim.

9) Gili Islands, Indonesia
The Gilis is made up of three islands, with Gili Trawangan the biggest of all. When I say big it will take you ten minutes to walk the entire length of the main beach. There are no cars on this these islands with only horse and cart to get you around. You come here to relax on the beaches and go diving with sharks and manta ray at some on the best site on Earth.

10) Hoi An, Vietnam
Hoi An is located on the coast and has a pretty decent beach. It is the also the place to come for tailor-made clothes. There are too many tailors to mention here with the main road pretty much consisting of them. You can get literally anything made here all you need to do is take a photo of the item you want and they will make it for you. A good quality suit will cost around $50-$100.

4. Arc de Triomphe and the champs-Elysees

This 164 foot Arc de Triomphe which was commissioned by the Emperor Napoleon I was made to evoke military mighty and triumph and that is what exactly continue to do today. The monument was erected and built in an age when leaders erected one in their honor and to fulfill their egos. The monument's architectural design and sculptures commemorate napoleon's generals and soldiers' varlour in battles. Make a tour to the Arc de Triomphe to culminate or walk down the equally grandiose Avenue des Champs-Elys?. You'll definitely feel grand yourself.

5. Sacre Coeur and Montmartre

This is and unmisteakable white dome, it sits at absolutely the highest point in Paris on Montmartre knoll, or sometimes referred to as butte. This basilica, was consecrated in 1909, and is best known for its garish gold mosaic interiors and not forgetting its dramatic terraces. From here you can expect getting views of Paris on a clear day. 1) Join some classes. So are you interested in music, dance? Consider joining guitar classes, learn drums, piano. Or absolutely anything that interests you.

2) Learn to cook. Cooking can be fun and I mean it. I always love to get in the kitchen once in a while. Start with basic stuff like I did. Start with coffee, tea, omelets, dosa, chapathi, rice, dal, etc. Just in case you may have to live alone or you may have to make something delicious for that significant other.

3) If interested in sports or in taking up any hobby. Take up cricket, tennis or football coaching, hip-hop, salsa or bharathanatyam. Take up new hobbies like pottery, craft making or try learning new languages. A new hobby added to my list and which you should include to. Practice graphotherapy.

4) Eat a lot of mangoes during summer. It is known as the king of fruits. Have it any way you want to. Slice it and eat it or squeeze it or juice it and drink it.

5) Learn how to drive a two wheeler or a car. Start with a bicycle, a bike and then a car. It's always good to learn anything early. However, it is never too late to learn also.

6) Watch movies. Well the movie you watch depends on your mood right? Go to a movie rental place.

7) Go on a shopping spree. Buy yourself some pair of shoes, clothes, watches and lot of ice cream. Just get out of the house. Go to the malls or markets. Shop till you drop.

8) Read books. Reading books not only passes time but also gives you knowledge and improves vocabulary. Books can and will become your favorite companion. Inculcate a habit of reading.

9) Learn to use a computer and the internet. Well it will help you get in touch with those friends who have not been touch with you or been away from them for a long time. Play PC games. Explore the information super highway and discover things you may not have known that existed.

10) Travel a lot. Go out with family or friends or both. Be on the move.
